Poinsettia Pointers – Keep Yours Thriving All Holiday Season!

Bright red poinsettias are a beautiful way to add holiday cheer to your home this time of year. But do you know how to keep them thriving throughout the holiday season? The Memphis Area Master Gardeners Club offer these helpful care tips, so you can keep yours looking beautiful well into the new year.

1.) When purchasing a poinsettia, select a plant with a thick sturdy stem that has dark green foliage. For the longest lasting plant, choose one with little or no yellow pollen showing.

2.) Poinsettias are tropicals that love sunlight. Place them in windows facing south, east, or west.

3.) Keep your plant at a consistent temperature and away from drafts caused by air registers or open doors.

4.) Make sure the container and decorative foil both have at least one drainage hole.

5.) Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. When the surface soil feels dry, water the plant until water runs out the drainage hole.
